Cosmetic Options to Improve your Smile

By Gerald Regni, DMD on May 01, 2016

It goes without saying that everyone wants a smile that they are proud to show off, that bright perfect smile that other people are envious of. Unfortunately, not that many of us are blessed with perfect teeth. No matter what the reason for this, the best option for restoring your smile and improving the appearance of your teeth is cosmetic dentistry. Fortunately, there are a number of procedures and treatments that can help to restore your self-confidence and self-esteem while improving dental health at the same time.

Correcting imperfect Teeth

There are a number of options available for the person who wants to correct the appearance of their existing teeth. These options include bonding, contouring, crowns, and porcelain veneers. These are considered the ideal option for teeth that are broken, chipped cracked, decaying, misaligned slightly, or are otherwise imperfect.

Replacing missing Teeth

While full and partial dentures as well as dental bridges are still popular among certain individuals, a more natural-looking and permanent solution is implants. Dental implants are ideal for the replacement of a single tooth to an entire set of lower and upper teeth. The only drawback is the amount of time it could take to restore your smile as it could require several trips to your dentist. However, it is worth the effort so don’t worry about it.

Teeth Straightening

Crooked or misaligned teeth can be straightened with different types of braces or teeth straightening systems. For instance, you have the following options:
  • Ceramic braces – while these are similar to traditional metal braces (see below), these are made from clear or tooth-colored ceramic brackets in order to blend in with your teeth.
  • Invisalign trays – these are basically a clear plastic tray that are customized to the gum and mouth structure of the individual being treated. In order to keep teeth moving, they are replaced every 2 weeks.
  • Lingual braces – although these are comprised of the same brackets and wires used in metal braces (see below), they are hidden by being placed on the inside of your teeth.
  • Traditional metal braces – these are comprised of brackets and wires that are made from stainless steel. Fortunately, these are not as large as they were in years gone by.
There are other options available where braces are concerned. Some dentists now use brackets and wires made from copper-titanium or nickel-titanium because they don’t require as many adjustments and are more durable.

Teeth Whitening

In-office teeth whitening treatments are available for people who want to treat discolored or stained teeth. Today there are bleaching systems that are utilized in conjunction with innovative light technology that can provide you with the beautiful, brighter smile that you have always wanted.

So, if you want to restore your smile to a healthier, more radiant state, and not be embarrassed by the appearance of your teeth cosmetic dentistry options could be exactly what you need.
